Choosing your wedding photographer

If you’re planning your wedding, looking for a photographer, and suddenly thinking, where do I start? I hear you. Before planning my wedding, I’d never thought about how I’d want our day captured.

Choosing the perfect wedding photographer for you is crucial in planning your big day. So here are a few things to consider to help you make this all-important decision.

Set a budget

Firstly, it's essential to establish a budget to guide your search. This will allow you to narrow your options and find a suitable photographer. Once you have your budget, take the time to research and compare different photographers. It's also a good idea to read reviews and view portfolios to ensure you choose a photographer you feel comfortable and confident with.

Meet with your potential photographer

You will spend significant time with your wedding photographer, so make sure you feel at ease and comfortable around them. Consider scheduling a meeting before making any commitments to ensure you have a good connection - this can be over Zoom.

What do they offer?

Remember that not all wedding photographers offer the same services, so it's essential to research and find a photographer that can provide what you want. Will they stay late to cover the dancefloor action, or will this cost more? My full-day package covers the whole day, and I'll always stay for at least an hour after the first dance, but much longer if the party is rocking!

How will they work on the day?

Ask yourself whether you're looking for a hands-on or fly-on-the-wall approach to photography on your wedding day? Do you put more importance on editorial-style shots over real candid moments? Review their portfolio and blog posts to ensure their style and approach resonates with you.

How do they edit their photos?

Consider the photographer's editing style. You want to ensure their use of colours and tones aligns with what you want - they aren’t suddenly going to edit their photos in a different style to suit what you would like. Editing styles can vary significantly from one photographer to the next, from muted to super-saturated and everything in between. The look of the photos can also range from light and airy (bright) to dark and moody. I prefer a film-like quality with natural colours and slightly desaturated greens - the look is timeless and won't date quickly.

Think about what you want and go with your heart. By finding the perfect photographer, you'll be able to enjoy your day to the max and cherish your wedding photos for a lifetime.
